Cobus Potgieter

Cobus Potgieter,Pengganti Jimmy The Rev Sullivan Drummer Avenged Sevenfold.
foto cobus potgieterTeka-teki siapa pengganti The Rev,Drummer Avenged Sevenfold mulai terkuak.

Semoga pengganti the rev kelak bisa menjadi sehebat the rev, khususnya bagi para sevenfoldism.

Biograph

Mike Portnoy was born on April 20, 1967 and raised in Long Beach, New York, where his interest in music started at an early age. "My father was a rock n' roll disc jockey, so I was always surrounded by music constantly. I had this huge record collection when I was real young and loved the Beatles and then later on Kiss. It was inevitable that I'd become a musician."

Although Mike taught himself how to play the drums, he did take music theory classes in high school. During that time he began playing in local bands Intruder, Rising Power and Inner Sanctum, the latter of which released their own album. Mike left the band after being awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee Music College in Boston.

An avid collector of many things, Mike has a vast array of Dream Theater memorabilia including bootlegs, posters, clippings and everything else under the sun with the band's name on it. He is also responsible for capturing everything the band does on video tape and DAT. His huge video collection includes favorite films as 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Jacob's Ladder and The Wall along with episodes of The Simpsons and memorable boxing matches.

Mike says his biggest influences are Rush drummer Neil Peart and the late Frank Zappa. Other favorites include drummers Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Philips, John Bonham and Keith Moon and bands such as The Beatles, Queen, Yes, Metallica, Jellyfish, Iron Maiden, U2 and Jane's Addiction. He is also a fan of rap music.

Terry Bozzio

Terry Bozzio first got his start as the drummer for Frank Zappa's backing band during the '70s, but would go on to become one of rock's most versatile session men, and form one of new wave's most visually exciting outfits, Missing Persons, along with then-wife, Dale Bozzio.

Born Terry John Bozzio on December 27, 1950 in San Francisco, California, Bozzio began playing on makeshift drums at an early age, before taking formal lessons at the age of 13 (inspired by the Beatles' infamous appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show). After playing in various local garage bands during the mid-late '60s, Bozzio majored in music while attending Sir Francis Drake High School and College of Marin - as he studied timpani and various forms of percussion.

By the early '70s, Bozzio had landed gigs with such rock musicals as Godspell and Walking in my Time, in addition to playing in several jazz/fusion outfits and appearing on his first record - backing trumpeter Luis Gasca on his 1972 release, Born to Love You. 1975 saw Bozzio catch his big career break, when he auditioned for and got a spot drumming for Frank Zappa. Bozzio's tenure with Zappa lasted only three years, but the drummer was featured on ten albums and countless tours (Bozzio also appeared in the Zappa concert movie, Baby Snakes). Bozzio also served as the inspiration for several Zappa compositions during their time together, including "the Black Page" and "Punky's Whips." After leaving Zappa in 1978, Bozzio nearly landed spots with a pair of potentially interesting outfits - a jazz supergroup called Group 87 (consisting of bassist Patrick O'Hearn and keyboardist Mark Isham, among others) and already-established hard rockers Thin Lizzy. Unfortunately, both wound up not working out for Bozzio (although he would play on Group 87's self-titled debut recording a couple of years later).

But Bozzio didn't have to wait long to join his next project, as he got the thumbs up to join prog rockers UK in 1979. The same year, he played on a pair of UK albums, (Danger Money and Night After Night), plus their subsequent supporting tours. Up next for Bozzio was a new wave project with his wife Dale Bozzio and former Frank Zappa guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, called Missing Persons. The group's space age sound and look turned heads right off the bat, as they enjoyed a pair of hit singles/videos ("Words" and "Destination Unknown"), as well as a gold certified debut album, 1982's Spring Session M. But the band (and Bozzio's marriage) didn't last much longer, as Missing Persons issued only two more albums before splitting up - 1984's Rhyme and Reason and 1986's Color in Your Life. Subsequently, Bozzio has focused primarily on either recording or touring with a wide variety of acclaimed artists, including Robbie Robertson, Gary Wright, Don Dokken, Paul Hyde, Herbie Hancock, Dweezil Zappa, Richard Marx, Jeff Beck, Duran Duran, Explorer's Club, Billy Sheehan, Steve Vai, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, among others.

Bozzio also began performing clinics for fellow drummers across the country, in addition to issuing an instructional home video in 1992, Solo Drums. The late '90s saw the drummer issue albums as part of the all-star trio Bozzio Levins Stevens (Black Light Syndrome and Situation Dangerous), plus collaborative albums with Chad Wackerman (Solos & Duets Vol. I & II), and solo releases (Drawing the Circle, Chamberworks, Solo Drum Music Vol. I & II). 2001 saw Terry rejoin Missing Persons for a series of reunion concerts.

Terry: the photos show just rough shells and mock-up stuff. But the cool thing is the arrangement of the melodic toms: chromatic on the left side - diatonic on the right. Hopefully I'll learn how to play this sucker someday! (MD 2004)

Phil Collins

Phil Collins is one of that very rare breed of artists who combine musical accessibility and overwhelming popularity with the respect of their most illustrious peers. Phil Collins is one of the world’s best-loved male vocalists but also a fantastic rock and jazz drummer.

In addition, he has also risen to the challenge of recording with artists as iconoclastic as Brian Eno, Robert Fripp and John Cale. Genre-hopping is no problem for the man who has been a member of the jazz ensemble Brand X and the hugely successful Genesis. In another role entirely, he has enjoyed both commercial success and critical acclaim for acting performances as divergent as a starring role in the British film "Buster" and a cameo in the American production "And the Band Played ON."

This is the same man who, in 1996, fulfilled a lifetime ambition by taking to the road with his own 20-piece big band, debuting at the Albert Hall in the company of conductor Quincy Jones and guest vocalist Tony Bennett, and going on to play seven other European concerts, including two shows at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival.

This year again, Phil Collins will play a selected number of summer festivals, not only in Europe but also in America with a new big band with special guest vocalist Oletta Adams and featuring Gerald Albright on saxophone.

If very much is known about Phil Collins as a rock artist, less is known about his big dedication to jazz music. Already at school, Phil Collins has been a big fan of legendary drummers Sid Catlett, Sonny Payne and Jo Jones, not to forget Buddy Rich.

For many years, Phil thought of forming a big band and for the 30th anniversary of the Montreux Jazz Festival, Claude Nobs, founder and artistic director of the Festival, gave him a "carte blanche" for an entire evening. First, he was terrified and said "how can I be a drummer in a big band where all the charts are written and I cannot read music!" Anyway, Phil decided to invent his own music writing and the first concert in Montreux in 1996 was such a success that another concert had to be added on the same day.

When Phil is asked about the difference between a rock drummer and a jazz drummer or how to be both of them, he replies, "I cannot switch from jazz to rock overnight. I need a type of immersion in rock or in jazz because the dynamic is very different from one style to another. Overall, the sound is totally different from rock to jazz."

IN 1964, Phil heard the LP "Love Supreme" by John Coltrane with Elvin Jones on drums for the first time. In 1966, he discovered two great LPs by Buddy Rich - "Swinging New Big Band" and the West Side Story medley. At the 1986 Grammy’s ceremony, the producer of the show asked Tony Williams, Buddy Rich and Phil Collins to do a couple of 4/4 exchanges. Phil thought a little bit about the idea and said to the producer "Please give Tony and Buddy more time - those guys deserve it more than I do and I’d rather sit in the audience and watch them play."

Phil now lives in Switzerland and has shown another side of his talent by drawing not only the official poster of this year’s Montreux Jazz Festival, but also portraits of Igor Stravinsky and Miles Davis, to be put in the entrances of the halls bearing their names at the Montreux Convention Center where the Festival is held.

One album by Phil Collins was called "But Seriously" and this title is definitely showing what Phil’s philosophy is all about; a great sense of humour but a very serious and dedicated approach to music, should it be jazz or rock.

Travis Barker

November 14, 1975

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The staff at the Joseph M Still Burn Center got a surprise visit from one of their former patients. Drummer Travis Barker stopped in today, to thank them.
Barker was treated at the burn center after he was involved in a plane crash in September 2008.
During his visit, Mr. Barker met with several patients, including Ronald Duffy, a tattoo artist who is recovering from burns on both his hands.
Barker, who was burned on his hands and legs, showed Duffy how far his recovery has progressed, pointing out that several tattoos were still intact after the burns had healed.
Duffy said, “He is an inspiration to those of us still here. I am so grateful that he stopped by.”
On his Twitter site, Barker wrote, "there are amazing talented people over there, angels is what i like to call them."
Wednesday, Barker said he and his band, Blink 182, plan to donate $100,000 to the burn centers that helped save his life last year.
That includes the Joseph M. Still Burn Center.

Travis Barker
...little clip from a live Drumsolo

Travis Barker is quickly becoming one of the more influential musicians on the Rock scene today. Travis began studying drums and taking lessons at the age of four. He studied with a jazz teacher and was exposed to many different styles of music. While in High School, Travis played in the jazz ensemble and marching band. He subsequently gained much experience performing at regional competitions and festivals. His senior year, Travis passed up drum corps tryouts for touring with a rock band. He gained more experience as a rock drummer in a few early bands such as Feeble, The Suicide Machines, and The Aquabats.

In 1998, Travis replaced Blink 182's first drummer and came to the band’s rescue at one show by learning over twenty songs in just a few hours and performing with them later that evening. Travis quickly became a much respected and popular member of the band and solidified his position as the timekeeper with his professional attitude, rhythmic skills and talent.

Blink-182 won a Teen Choice Award, a Blockbuster Music Award, and appeared on the MTV Awards 2000 where they performed "All The Small Things" and won Best Group Video. In Europe, they received an MTV Europe Award for Best New Act. They have performed on Saturday Night Live and the Tonight Show (twice), appeared in the hit movie American Pie and opened the Billboard Music Awards. The band has also graced the covers of Rolling Stone, Alternative Press (twice) and Teen People. At this point, Blink-182 is a worldwide phenomenon, with their recordings reaping multi-platinum status and their concert tours selling out everywhere. The band's popularity has only increased since their formation in '93. In 1994 they released their first full-length album, Cheshire Cat, on Grilled Cheese (a division of Cargo Music). In 1996, they signed a joint-venture record deal with Cargo Music and MCA Records, with their first MCA release Dude Ranch (1997) setting the stage for their current success. By the end of 1998, they had emerged as one of the most popular pop-punk bands of the year.

Worldwide sales of Enema of the State are now over seven million copies, not to mention the fact that the album has been on Billboard's Top 200 for over a year. The album's three singles, "What's My Age Again," "All The Small Things" and "Adam's Song" have dominated MTV, alternative, rock and Top-40 radio. Travis will be on tour in support of Blink’s latest release and follow-up to "Enema of The State", "Take Off Your Pants And Jacket".

Box Car Racer, Barker's collaboration with Blink bandmate Tom DeLonge, David Kennedy and Anthony Celestino, filmed their second video recently with director Alexander Kostas (Filter, Andrew W.K.).

April 7, 2005
Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker of Blink 182 have started a new group named Plus 44, which features vocals from Carol Heller of Get The Girl.

The band are aiming to have a record released this year, with Hoppus telling MTV: "It's very exciting, like a breath of fresh air. It's all very electronic right now. We have a girl singing - she and I are trading off vocals.”

Barker also commented: "If Blink was the daytime, Plus 44 is the night time. It's such a departure from Blink, but it's amazing. I play all the drums, but they're electronic drums, plus I play piano and keyboard on it. And I've been making beats for it... I am just going to keep working on stuff. Everything's A-plus."

Blink 182 announced that they were to go on indefinite hiatus in February, citing a desire to spend more time with their families, however rumours surfaced that the trio had in fact fallen out.

September 2008:
Travis was hospitalized following a plane crash on September 19. Four others died in the crash. Barker was admitted to a Georgia burn center to treat third-degree burns to his lower body and returned home ten days later.

Chris Adler

Roaring out of Richmond, Virginia comes the total metal juggernaut that is Lamb of God. Behind the wheel of this startling musical super-nova is drummer, Chris Adler. With a symmetrical precision, an intriguing musicality and an undeniable assult, Chris assumes his position as the rhythmic overlord of Lamb of God's music. Ear-piercing bells, sizzling splashes and trashy chinas punctuate Chris' flamboyant yet economic time-keeping. Their first album, "New American Gospel" put them on the map. Their second album, "As the Palaces Burn" made believers out of all. Their third and most recent release, "Ashes of the Wake" has brought them to the forefront of heavy metal, making them a true contender for the genre's crown.
